How to search LeftEast

Following the closing down of LeftEast, this is now a static website.

You can search everything on LeftEast with Google.

Type your topic plus site:lefteast.org in the search bar. That tells Google to show results only from LeftEast.

  • In Google, type: your topic site:lefteast.org
  • Example: Balkan politics site:lefteast.org 

 Reliable patterns you can copy 

  • Exact phrase: put quotes around it
    “labor movement” site:lefteast.org 
  • Exclude a word: add a minus sign
    Ukraine site:lefteast.org -NATO 
  • Either this OR that
    housing OR rent site:lefteast.org 
  • Search by author name
    ○ Peter Lippman site:lefteast.org

  • Look for a title match

Searching by date of publication 

After running a search, click Tools under the Google box, then use Any time to pick Past year or Custom range.

Advanced search (more options) 

  • In Google results, click Settings > Advanced search
  • In the form, set site or domain to lefteast.org. 
  • Use last update to pick Past year or a Custom range when you need a date window. 
  • Shortcuts you can type directly with site:lefteast.org: after:2023-01-01, before:2024-12-31, intitle:”…”.

Examples

  • Find interviews about education: interview education site:lefteast.org 
  • Articles on privatization excluding book reviews: privatization site:lefteast.org -“book review” 
  • A specific headline you half remember: “After the referendum” site:lefteast.org 

Tips if you get too many or too few results 

  • Too many results: add a word, use quotes, or exclude a term with a minus sign. 
  • Too few results: remove quotes, try a synonym, or delete exclusions.
